It enjoyed great success, although an acute lack of armor hindered its performance. Recent rediscoveries of Star League technology have given a resurrection to the design. Originally intended for close infantry support, the mech's speed proved readily able for reconnaisance work as well. These new mechs have great potential in front-line units, both as close support for fire support units and as recon units. îAfter some debate, Burger engineers decided to use an extra-light engine for the revamped Hussar. Though this increased the vulnerability of the side torsos, the engineers decided this was a fair trade-off for small gains in speed and firepower, dubious gains in armor protection, and the ability to incorporate double heat sinks. In addition, the 300 XL series of engines is fairly common across the Inner Sphere and, though expensive, is relatively easier to obtain than other engine types. The primary weapon on the Hussar is a Sutel-line ER Large Laser, which gives it above-average targeting and improved range, along with less maintenance than other similar weapons. Coupled with the ER Large is a Martell Medium Laser, which provides additional short-range support in sticky situations. Once plagued by a shortage of armor, the 200-E Hussar now boasts five-and-a-half tons of ferro-fibrous armor, almost quadruple the original armor, providing substantial protection for a mech of its size. ˜Burger's Renegades has reportedly modified one of their Hussar's to take advantage of the C3 Computer system recently made available by the Draconis Combine. By replacing the Medium Laser with a C3 Slave unit, the Hussar can use its speed to dash onto the field and act as a spotter for its lance- and company-mates, where all would have a significant advantage in combat. Another variant, spotted in the 2nd Tancredi Highlanders RCT, replaces the Medium Laser with TAG for artillery spotting. One experiemtal model has been created in light of recent technological advances in the Inner Sphere. The HSR 250-E Hussar trades in the Ferro-fibrous armor for 5.3 tons of new Heavy Ferro-fibrous armor, offering maximum protection for its weight class. The Medium Laser is replaced with TAG, allowing the HSR 250-E to spot for Arrow IV artillery and semi-guided LRM munitions. One interesting aspect of this variant is the 200 kilograms of cargo space built into the right torso, just below the head. Burger engineers have stated that this space is for supplies for the pilot, as the HSR 250-E is intended to be used in extended-length campaigns with little or no support. øThe new Hussar has been creating a stir within the Inner Sphere since the first run was shipped in June, 3053 to various mercenary and House units, including the respected Black Rose and Burger's Renegades RCT, for field testing. Since then, Burger's Battlemechs has averaged one run every 18 months, and the 200-E Hussar can be found with the ComGuards, Wolf's Dragoons, and Lyran and Davion units. A few have also trickled into the Draconis Combine, in both the 1st Genyosha and the Ryuken regiments.
