Overview:

Traditionally, mechs in the 55-ton weight class have been favorites among Inner Sphere mechwarriors, being rugged enough to trade fire with heavier mechs, yet nimble enough to chase own lighter mechs.  During and after the Clan invasion, newer versions of these mechs were put into use.  However, at the same time, the Clans began using their own versions of these IS machines.  One of the most noteworthy of these refits is the Clan Griffin IIC, which shed unneccessary weight in favor of improved weapons and maneuverability.   A new mech, the FLC-H1 Flechette, is now being designed to counter the Griffin IIC and other Clan refits as well.

Capabilities:

The Flechette is the ideal medium mech.  It can keep pace with lighter units, jump, and engage heavier enemies.  Using only minimal heat sinks, it can still fire all of its primary weapons, even after jumping.  A total of four LRM-5 launchers are the mainstay of the Flechette's armament.  Five extended-range lasers, two medium and three small, supplement the missile system at closer ranges, and CASE protects the ammo bins in the side torsos.  Unfortunately, to accommodate the additional mass needed, an XL engine was installed, somewhat reducing survivability.  This was partially mitigated by providing near-maximum armor.

Deployment:

The Flechette's deployment is consistent with the design team's intention; most of those units currently in use are located on worlds along the Clan border, mostly in Lyran space.  A few flechettes are scattered among units in the former Federated Suns.  It has been noted that the mech's high cost has hindered further production and deployment.
