U.S. Highway 287 in Wyoming

This photo page shows northbound US 287 (with WY 789 in tow for most of the photos) from I-80/US 30 in Rawlins, WY north to WY 220 at Muddy Gap, taken during our 2005 summer vacation.  Three of the photos involve crossings of the Continental Divide.  The photos are shown in the order they were taken (as we proceeded north along US 287).   All photos were taken by the webmaster on August 2, 2005.  Click on a thumbnail for a larger image.

Northbound US 287 on the east side of Rawlins, where it splits into the BUSINESS route through town and a BYPASS route bypassing most of the town to the east.
At the north end of the BYPASS route, on the north side of Rawlins.
The first of two crossings of the Continental Divide along US 287/WY789.

Descending into and driving through the Separation Flats, with the Ferris Mountains in the background.  Note that WYDOT added a climbing lane for southbound traffic climbing up out of the Flats.

Near the north side of the Separation Flats is the junction with WY 73, a 6-mile-long spur rout into Bairoil.  Of note are the gate arms and signs used to close US 287 during winter storms.

A couple miles northeast of WY 73 is the second crossing of the Continential Divide for US 287/WY789.
At "Three Forks" (also labeled "Muddy Gap Junction" on some maps) is the western terminus of WY 220.  WY 220 continues ahead to Casper while US 287/WY789 turns left towards Ladner and Riverton.  WY 220 was designated US 87E before that split designation was dropped in 1939.
