North Crosstown

Description

The newest state highway in the Twin Cities, the highway known as MN 610 was originally proposed in the mid 1960s as a "North Crosstown" to serve forecasted development in the northern metro. Intense study did not occur, though, until the mid 1970s, and included various suggestions as running it west to US 12 (near Delano) or east to Stillwater. Other suggestions included rerouting US 169 onto the Mississippi River bridge portion (at the time, US 169 ran along West River Rd). Lack of funding delayed the project, and it was not until the mid '80s when the first sections were constructed. Now, MN 610 runs from US 169 east to US 10, and funding has been identified in the TSP to extend it west to I-94, so MN 610 is poised to become a major corridor in the northern metro area.

Current Construction

None that I know of.

Future Plans

MnDOT has budgeted money over the next 20 years to complete 610 out to I-94.
Hennepin County has proposed a county extension of MN 610 west of I-94, which would tie into CSAH 10. The future I-94/MN 610 interchange has been designed to accommodate this extension.

Froggie Suggests:

Expedite the completion of MN 610.
Add loops to complete the US 169 cloverleaf, and add C/D roads at the interchange to both routes.
Widen MN 610 to 6 lanes between US 169 and MN 252.
Study the feasibility of providing ramps to/from the east at East River Rd/CSAH 1.
